CHINA

Close call

XinjianProvince, China

After being 2000km on a wide road with wide shoulders I got on a 200km section of narrow road without any shoulder at all. The raised road was literally just wide enough for two vehicles and there was a heavy lorry traffic. And there was a cyclist.

I hear one or two vehicles honking their horns, see a lorry going past me close and then another lorry dropping off the road and falling on it’s side on the left hand side of the road.

I run to the lorry and see one guy awake, one unconscious. I’m at the scene alone a moment which feels like an hour, but is probably just 10 seconds. I climb into the lorry and kick out the windscreen so the people arriving to the scene get to help the men inside. Luckily both of them are on their feet in a few minutes and seem to be without major injuries.

Apparently the first lorry had started to overtake me when the second lorry had started to overtake the first lorry. Then the second lorry drove off the road to avoid a crash.

As the drivers seemed to be ok and Police and ambulance were on their way, I wished them good luck and kept cycling. I rode to the next town, had a long dinner and forgot to buy provisions for the following 250km of nothingness.
