TAJIKISTAN

A road less ridden

Autumn colors in the Shokdara Valley, Tajikistan

After we recovered from the food poisoning number X in the Stans a few days in a lovely academic city of Khorog, we finally set off towards the Pamir plateau. We decided to go for the Shokdara valley, instead of Wakhan valley or the more busy M41, the Pamir Highway. The autumn colors were beautiful in the valley.

Shokhara, Tajikistan

A Tajik family invited us to sleep in their home and fed us one night in he Shokhdara valley. People in the Central Asia are really hospitable, unconditionally. When eventually back home, I’ll try to remember all these occasions and act accordingly when I see anyone with a pack pack or a loaded bicycle.

Feeling the air getting thinner. Sometimes the smallest gears are just not small enough. Loose gravel and first time over 3000m means hard work.

Acclimatizing 48 hours at 3200m

We took a day off from cycling to acclimatize at 3200m. That night water bottles froze for the first time. Evidently the stream next to our camp was extremely cold as well. At night we heard wolves howling up in the mountains.
